Applicants looking to complete the Contemporary Popular Music major at the University of Western Australia (UWA), should provide an audition video and register for an informal interview (in addition to fulfilling the standard University entrance requirements).

Audition Requirements

• Describe the music you make (instruments you play, genre).

• Upload  1 - a link to a video recording of you playing/performing your music (maximum 4 minutes).
  • We are assessing your musicianship and creativity.
  • Audio and production quality is not important. Smartphone recordings are fine.
  • You should play your own original music or a significantly reworked version of an existing track.
  • The music can be performed solo or in a group.

• Upload 2 – a link to audio/video recording of a song you have written, arranged, or a unique reinterpretation of a cover song.
  • What we are assessing: Your musicianship, creativity, and contribution to the composition or arrangement.
  • Audio and production quality are not a factor—smartphone recordings are acceptable.
  • Your submission must be either:
    • Your own original song,
    • A significantly reworked version of an existing track, or
    • A new arrangement of an existing song that showcases your musical creativity.

• Clearly describe your creative contribution to the video performance submitted.
  • What instrument/s did you play?
  • How much did you contribute to composing/writing/arranging/producing the track?

• Artist Statement - submit a 300-word statement addressing the following:
  • Why do you love music?
  • Why do you want to study Contemporary Popular Music (CPM)?
  • What other majors are you interested in (if any)?
  • What are your career aspirations?
  • Tell us about your journey/experience in music so far

Interview

Applicants will be invited for an informal interview with our Contemporary Music Faculty, on either 20 Sept or 1 Dec 2025 or at another time as agreed.
