Lonely and maladjusted following her mother’s death, Eleanor Vance accepts a mysterious invitation to stay as a guest at Hill House. The isolated mansion has remained uninhabited for years, and has developed a reputation for being haunted.
Not long after their arrival, Eleanor and the other guests of Hill House bear witness to some strange and frightening disturbances, and come to realise that one member of their party in particular is in grave danger.
