Back in the winter of 2022, the universe (or Delsinki rather) brought Kylie Auldist and Steven Gates together for the very first time, as part of the touring show ‘Sing a Song of Sixpence’. This meeting instigated an immediate friendship and planted the seed for a musical collaboration that has been a long time coming. Please join us, as together they explore and re interpret the incredible repertoire of songs that both artists have attained over the course of their illustrious careers.
Kylie Auldist Described by The Music Magazine as “Melbourne’s high priestess of soul”, Kylie was born to sing - hailing from the small farming community of Hay, New South Wales, Kylie was introduced to music at an early age and recorded her first song at just six years old. From humble beginnings, Kylie has grown to become one of Australia’s most respected, versatile, and accomplished performers.
Relocating to Melbourne in the early 90’s she became a fixture on the Fitzroy funk scene before becoming a backing vocalist for artists such as Renee Geyer and Jimmy Barnes. In 2006 she joined forces with Australia’s premier funk outfit, the now 6 time ARIA-nominated Bamboos, a relationship which continues to this day and up until 2020 she was also the voice for soul jazz Hammond trio, Cookin on 3 Burners.
In 2009 she signed a solo deal with UK’s Tru Thoughts records releasing three critically acclaimed albums ‘Just Say’ (2008), ‘Made of Stone’ (2009) and ‘Still Life’ (2012) and in 2016 she released her fourth solo album ‘Family Tree’ on Soul Bank Records (K7)(UK). Both ‘Made of Stone’ & ‘Family Tree’ won the coveted AGE Music Award & the releases were championed by leading international tastemakers including US radio’s KCRW and UK luminaries such as BBC’s
Craig Charles, Gilles Peterson and Mark Lamarr. The follow-up album ‘This Is What Happiness Looks like’ (2020) is quite firmly entrenched on an electro soul boogie tip, rooted deep in the NY club scene of the early 80’s. This album was nominated for best album at the 2021 Music
Victorian Awards & the AIR Independent Music Awards and Kylie herself was nominated for best female and live artist.
Kylie shot to global prominence in 2016 when her sublime vocals from the C3B’s song ‘This Girl’ were remixed by the French Sony artist Kungs and it reached #1 in France, Germany and Portugal and #2 on the UK charts (where it sat for 9 weeks). It took out the #1 spot on iTunes in
the UK and many countries throughout Europe, reaching the top 100 in over 50 countries including in the US where it hit #2 on the electronic charts. The song itself has well over 1 billion streams.
Not satisfied with being at the epicentre of Australia’s funk, soul, and disco scene, she is also an in-demand international session vocalist. She has sung on collaborations with Boy George’s long-time producer Marc Vedo and had underground club hits with UK artists Flevans & Aldo Vanucci. In 2022 she had a club hit in South America with the Brazilian Artist HAWK.
With such an epic back catalogue behind her it would be fair to say that Kylie has had a really successful recording career but it’s only after seeing her live do you really understand Kylie’s true talent. She possesses a voice that can run the gamut from soaring vocal pyrotechnics to heart-wrenching tenderness and her down to earth warm and infectious (but no BS) personality permeates through everything she does. Whether it’s with the Bamboos, singing with the MSO or performing 80’s soul with her solo crew, her onstage presence is truly joyous and its easy to see why she has such an ardent live following. Kylie is a remarkable artist whose musical journey continues to blossom and expand.

STEVEN GATES (he/him) is a musician, actor, writer, director, sound-designer, music producer and film-maker – and comedy/cabaret performer. He began his career wanting to be taken seriously as a moody guitar-slinger in the ‘90s, but was blown off course by his first break: playing a magical swagman on the ABC children's program, Shape Shape Shape. As a member of the Aria award-winning music based comedy group Tripod, 'Gatesy' has released over twenty CD/DVDs since 1997, and has performed worldwide including four Edinburgh Fringe Festivals and Montreal's Just for Laughs. Tripod first gained national attention for their early Song-In-An-Hour segment on Triple J, and have written songs for countless TV shows, video game companies, and orchestras including the MSO. Steven was a core cast‐member and writer on the sketch show, skitHOUSE, and other tv credits include Good News Week, Spicks and Specks, Upper Middle Bogan and FISK. His most treasured accolade is the peer-voted Piece of Wood award, which was bestowed on him at the 2012 Melbourne International Comedy Festival for Stubborn Monkey Disorder, his show with Bob Franklin. In 2017 he premiered a two-hander show with Paul McDermott which toured successfully for several years. Steven is currently a showbiz swiss-army-knife: besides Tripod, he produces, directs and tour-manages comedy/cabaret shows, writes and performs songs for commercials, and was recently creating featured songs for The Weekly on the ABC. Currently in pre-production for his first ever solo album.
