Naming Rites
Հովհաննես becomes Jovhannes becomes John becomes Jack…there are ghosts on the goldfields and they will be named.
Naming Rites explores the hidden whispers and forgotten sounds of Armenian immigrants on the Goldfields where John currently lives. In an attempt to reconstitute their existence through music, voice and performance John seeks to re-name and resurrect lost fragments and gestures in a struggle for a fuller remembering.
Each performance is approximately 30 minutes followed by a conversation with John.

Naming Rites is created and produced through Punctum’s regionally based Seedpod residency program with the generous support of Creative City Ballarat and Ballarat Trades Hall.
Naming Rites’ creation and presentation is taking place on the lands of the Djaara and Wadawurrung people. We pay our deep respects to Elders past and present and their living culture.
