About
Inconspicuous in the magnificence of St John’s College halls is a hidden gem. As historic as the college itself, yet of a much humbler origin is a hand-crafted square piano forte. Intended for the ordinary home, thousands of these lovely early pianos came to Australian shores, so popular were they among our early settlers. They were the centre of the home, the sounds of home, around which the family could gather with friends for a spontaneous dance, or simply play a favourite song or tune. Now, thanks to the thoughtful restoration of the Broadwood Square Piano forte (c. 1845) at St John’s, you can hear for yourselves its intimate expressive voice.Featured artist is Michael Tsalka, one of the world’s foremost proponents of early pianofortes. Renowned as an exquisite pianist and harpsichordist, his global touring enables him to perform on many early piano fortes, endearing them to audiences wherever they are heard.
Program includes works by JS Bach, Vanhal, Kats-Chernin & Carr-Boyd
