Cutting Onions - by Nadia Sirninger Rankin
Bizarre, grotesque and observant, Cutting Onions dissects a relationship constrained by the oppression of gender expectations. Challenging conventionally accepted behaviours and invites reflection and introspection, it depicts the experience of one woman, while representing something universally experienced by many.
The piece is a handcrafted visual spectacle that discards refinement and minimalism for an abundance of raw artistry. Set in a transformative kitchen space, the nuanced storytelling is matched with jarring and often surreal imagery. The kitchen transfigures itself, congruent to the woman’s emotional turmoil and emphasises the impact of the man’s unintentionally harmful actions.
*Venue: The Showroom
*Contains some coarse language, themes of mental health, theatrical gore, self-harm and references to sexual abuse. Mild strobe & haze effects and harsh sound effects. Suitable for audiences aged 15+.
*Accessibility: No wheelchair accessibility.
