Melbourne History Talk: what is queer history?
About
For a very long time queer (LGBTIQA+) people have been vilified, marginalised and criminalised. Keeping records of our lives was always dangerous. Given all that, uncovering our history has always presented challenges. In Australia since the 1980s a concerted effort by many people, working in many different ways, has enabled the unearthing of these histories. In this presentation, historian Graham Willett, explores these processes, identifying what we know, and how we know it; what we don’t know; and how our work can continue.
Graham Willett is a historian an arch-tivist and a recovering academic. He has been researching and writing Australian gay and lesbian and queer history since 1979. He is a long term volunteer with the Australian Queer Archives and publisher of Queer Oz Folk.
