Head over Heels: High School Edition - Vermont SC Production (SOLD OUT)
About
This is Vermont Secondary College's 2024 production of "Head over Heels: High School Edition".Head Over Heels: High School Edition is a jukebox musical set to the music of The Go-Go’s with a plot adapted from The Countess of Pembroke’s Arcadia by Sir Philip Sidney. It is performed in the style of a Shakespearean farce.
Synopsis
The musical follows the royal family of Arcadia, comprised of King Basilius, Queen Gynecia, the beautiful Princess Pamela, and the younger Princess Philoclea (who loves the shepherd-boy, Musidorus); along with their attendants, Dametas and his daughter, Mopsa. Their kingdom is prosperous due to a divine power called the ‘Beat’.
Unfortunately, the mysterious non-binary oracle Pythio foretells the loss of the ‘Beat’ once four contradictory prophecies come true:
- The younger daughter will become lovers with a liar. If he’s forbidden, “she” he’ll then become.
- The elder daughter will agree to marry, but without a groom.
- The king will commit adultery with his wife.
- The king will meet and make way for a new king.
As each prophecy is fulfilled, a flag will fall from the sky. And once all four flags have fallen, the kingdom will plunge into an apocalyptic state.
King Basilius decides to keep the prophecies to himself and Dametas, choosing instead to prevent the prophecy from coming true by finding the new king and killing him. He brings the rest of the royal family with him to keep an eye on his wife and daughters, telling them they are going on a hunting trip. A series of hijinks ensue along the way.
This musical serves a modern twist on classic themes of love and identity, ultimately celebrating the power of love and acceptance in all its forms.
