All Night Vigil - Rachmaninov
About
Among the choral works of Sergei Rachmaninov the All Night Vigil, 1915, is valued as one of the most sublime works in choral music. In concert the fifteen movements are sung not all night but in succession. Ten are on Znamenny, Greek and KJiev chants, supported by rich Romantic harmonies. With the Revolution of 1917 churches were closed and this work became the pinnacle of an era of a cappella sacred music in Russia. The Melbourne Chamber Choir will be joined by Coro Innominata of Sydney for this performance and will have traveled to Sydney for a performance.
