Rossini's "Petite Messe Solennelle"
VICTORIA CHORALE
Conductor Mario Dobernig
Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle was composed in 1863 and revised in 1867. It is one of his very last compositions before his death in 1868 and was first performed as an intimate work with just 12 singers at one of his soirees. It is neither ‘Petite’ nor ‘Solennelle’. Lasting about 90 minutes it is one of the longest masses in the repertoire. It is more operatic than solemn and some of its rhythms are almost jazzy. The solo piano parts are demanding and some of the most famous singers and pianists have recorded or performed it. It has a very special place in the repertoire and is like no other choral work.
