About
During the 1970's, a house in Mozart Street, St Kilda was the shared home of some of St Kilda's most interesting painters, photographers, film makers and musicians, including one of Melbourne’s best-known bands, the Skyhooks.Photographer, Carol Jerrems, famous for documenting the revolutionary spirit of the 1970's, also lived there with fellow Prahran College ex-students Greg Macainsh, Ian Macrae and Robert Ashton. Her 1975 photo, Vale Street ( above, © Ken Jerrems and the estate of Lance Jerrems), some suspect, may well have been shot at the Mozart Street property.
The house’s then co-owner, Philip Bird, uncovered their stories from behind the grime and graffiti, layer by layer, like a palimpsest, during his family’s 1987-2003 renovation and has further explored their stories.
His talk will explore a time when St Kilda was home to some of the most creative and influential artists of their generation at a time of great social and political change.
