Identifying and describing the Functional Impact of SLDs
The severity of a Specific Learning Disorder (SLD) is largely determined by the functional impact experienced by the student both in and outside the learning environment. Consequently, it is essential that the assessing psychologist can describe both the level of functional impact - and the specific behaviours and challenges likely to be experienced by a student going forward. These may include challenges related to the acquisition of new skills, the capacity to demonstrate knowledge and skills, and/or the ongoing impact on mental health. The level and specifics of Functional Impact also informs many of the recommendations (particularly those associated with adjustments) that will be made.
