Rethinking AAC & AAC Practice; by David Niemeijer, PhD
About
The morning starts with a data-informed review of what we can learn from current AAC use in Australia and beyond. We will identify critical challenges and opportunities. Next we will look at the potential of AAC beyond a speech prosthetic. Which inherent properties of a well-designed AAC system can support language development and education? Finally, we will take a look at how Proloquo was designed to overcome many of the limitations of existing AAC systems while facilitate teaching and learning. The afternoon starts with a deeper dive into how dual-coding and embodied cognition are leveraged in the design of Proloquo. Next, we will challenge existing modeling practices using serious gaming and by drawing lessons from early language development.Location
