Preview Performance: Kaddish - A Holocaust Memorial Concert
Marking 80 years since the liberation of the first extermination camps and the deaths of the Artists and Musicians from Theresienstadt / Terezin, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, in association with the Australian War Memorial, will premiere the Holocaust Memorial on 31 Oct 2024, in Hamer Hall.
In this interactive preview event, Christopher Latham OAM will show the projections that accompany the Holocaust Memorial, to get feedback from participants to help refine and shape it in this final leadup to the premiere.
The Holocaust Memorial
The concert includes Leonard Bernstein’s Kaddish Symphony and the Holocaust Memorial, made up of 14 works by Holocaust victims and survivors. The MSO will also premiere a new work by Elena Kats-Chernin and William Barton, about Kristallnacht which also honours William Cooper, leader of the Australian Aboriginal League's protest against Kristallnacht.
This concert is designed to promote healing and deeper understanding of historical trauma resulting from the Holocaust. The performance does contain graphic images including of deceased persons, and people in distress.
The memorial is set to take place on 31 October 2024 at Hamer Hall.
Christopher Latham OAM
Christopher Latham OAM is the Australian War Memorial’s first musical artist-in-residence, and the director of the upcoming Holocaust Memorial.
He was awarded an honorary Doctorate by the University of Canberra, the order of Arts and Letters by France and the Medal of the Order of Australia for his work on music and war. All his work is made to lighten the burden of trauma, and to help those affected, to heal.
