The role of psychiatry in residential aged care
About
The prevalence of mental illness is higher amongst residents of aged care facilities than it is for the general population. Amongst a multitude of reasons within aged care facilities, mental health issues can often become more pronounced due to the shift in environment, decreased independence, and limited social interaction. Psychiatrists have a key role in providing differential assessment, diagnoses and treatment to older people with mild to severe mental illness, including people for whom severe behavioural and psychological symptoms complicate dementia. This includes adapting treatment to accommodate the often accompanying complex physical and cognitive comorbidities and providing support and advice for families. How to Join
