GLORIOUS CHORAL MUSIC
St Mary's Singers, conducted by Simon NiemiĆski, are presenting a program of choral music in the magnificent setting of St Mary's Cathedral. The Choir, accompanied by Brass, Percussion and Organ, will present:-
Rutter, Gloria
Haydn, Missa Sancti Nicolai (Excerpts)
Holst, Turn Back, O Man
Wood, O Thou The Central Orb
Stanford, St Patrick's Breastplate
Highlights:
* John Rutter's Gloria has been enormously popular since its 1974 premiere and is an exciting celebration of choral music with a powerfully expressive brass, percussion and organ accompaniment.
* Joseph Haydn's early Missa Sancti Nicolai is not frequently performed - its lyrical and dancelike themes strive to capture the spirit of the nativity.
* This year is the centenary of the passing of Charles Villiers Stanford and his St Patrick's Breastplate is a stirring setting of an old Irish prayer of protection.
