Walk and Talk around Malvern Public Gardens
About
This 8 acre reserve was originally the site of a natural spring once used by the Peoples of the East Kulin Nations. It has been a part of Malvern’s community life since 1888, when the Shire approached Thomas Pockett, a gardener of note, “to prepare a plan of a sandy barren waste with a view of converting it into a municipal garden”. Pockett spent twenty years transforming the gardens by laying out serpentine paths, curved garden beds, and planting a diverse collection of native and exotic trees. Also, he created the ornamental pond and fountain with a Charles Robinette grotto which is still a highlight.
Malvern Public Gardens are listed on the Victorian Heritage Register as of historic, social, aesthetic and scientific significance and contain 16 significant trees.
