'Russian Art and Revolution, and European Art of the Avant-Garde 1917-1930'.
Russian pioneers of the early 20th century (including Kasimir Malevich, El Lissitzky and Varvara Stepanova) are discussed. The talk focuses on the exciting and diverse ways in which the role of art changed in the post-Revolutionary society, completely changing earlier assumptions about art. Russian artists pursued an unprecedented degree of experimentation. Freely crossing between art, design, photography and film, they defined and celebrated the formation of a new society, their divergent art practices still inspiring artists today.
In 1917 the De Stijl movement was launched anticipating the opening of the Bauhaus in Germany two years later. The ideas of individual artists such as Mondrian, Rietveld, Wassily Kandinsky and Marcel Breuer changed the face of art across Europe and beyond, lasting into the 21st century.
Visitors welcome.
A short break with refreshments is provided between the two lectures.
