Introduction to NT Indigenous Languages
About
The NT is home to more than 100 First Nations languages, including traditional languages, newer contact languages and English/English-based language varieties. Given this, it’s not surprising that First Nations students bring with them to the classroom diverse language backgrounds and strengths. In this seminar we will scratch the surface of this diversity by providing an overview of some of the First Nations languages and language ecologies of the NT. Through examining the large variety in sound systems, grammatical structures and lexicon displayed by different languages and language varieties, this session will highlight the importance of teachers' awareness of the diverse linguistic backgrounds which First Nations students bring with them to the classroom.Location
