Lights Everlasting: Excursion of Stained Glass Windows in Geelong and Environs
Guided bus tour of significant stained-glass windows with Dr Bronwyn Hughes OAM acclaimed author, historian and stained-glass expert and her colleague, researcher Ray Brown, descendant of James Ferguson, one of the principals of Ferguson & Urie, a firm well represented on the day’s tour, as well as at St George the Martyr, Queenscliff.
It is a rare chance to see a selection of Geelong’s superb stained-glass heritage in school chapels, churches and private homes, and to learn more about the ideas, artists and stories that can be seen in these shining lights.
DATE: Saturday October 19th, 2024.
LOCATION: Pick up & DROP OFF point: Hearne Parade Car Park- overlooking Corio Bay (in between Geelong Botanical Gardens and Hearne Parade)
TIME: 9.00am-3.15pm Cost: $120 includes lunch.
DESTINATIONS:
Geelong Grammar School, Sacred Heart College, Christ Church Anglican church, St Peter and St Paul’s Catholic church and two private residences.
We are most grateful to the generous owners and custodians of these significant stained glass windows for allowing us to have a viewing of them.
There will be a luncheon at the Royal Geelong Yacht Club about 12noon with a viewing of a short film by Dr. Hughes.
There will be a luncheon at the Royal Geelong Yacht Club with a viewing of a short film by GLAAS Inc, introduced by Dr. Hughes. This documentary focusses on a small group of Australian war commemorative windows from five major conflicts - the Boer War to Afghanistan - and weaves their stories into those of the artists, architecture and social values of their day.
The film will complement the stained glass that will be visited over the course of the day.
