A Forgotten History: Moorooka Aboriginal Camp Life
About
Book Launch: "A Forgotten History: Moorooka Aboriginal Camp Life" by Chrissy Hansen-Doherty, based on the recollections of her mother Auntie Sue Hansen who lived in the Moorooka Aboriginal Camp in the 1940s - 50s. The camp was located on the edge of what is now Toohey Forest between Mayfield Road and Evans Road. The book launch will feature Auntie Sue and Chrissy discussing the book and their personal family history, and author and historian Ray Kerkhove on the role of the camps in Brisbane’s First Nations history.
“This book, our family treasure, concentrates on representing part of the life and memories of our mother, when she was a young child growing up in the Moorooka Aboriginal camp. This represents an important, difficult yet little understood period in First Nations history. It was a time of transition between the era of Removals and Aboriginal Reserves, and our current era of Civil Rights, Land Rights and Urban Aboriginal life,” author Chrissy Hansen-Doherty.
