Contemporary Art on the Road: MUMA (Caulfield)
About
A fully subsidised workshop for arts educators – with presentations by MUMA, VCAA and Gertrude as well as artist Georgia Morgan – hosted at Monash University Museum of Art.
In 2024, CAOTR will present six workshops, in conjunction with educators from four regional galleries: Horsham Regional Art Gallery, Castlemaine Art Museum, Bendigo Art Gallery and Shepparton Art Museum. The program will also present with Monash University Museum of Art (MUMA) and at Gertrude's home location, Gertrude Contemporary (Preston South).
The first part of the program consists of formal presentations by educators from Gertrude, Monash University Museum of Art (MUMA), the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) and the host organisations. This will include a presentation by Kathryn Hendy-Ekers, Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority. A presentation and hands-on workshop by a current Gertrude Studio Artist will form the second part of the program.
Georgia Morgan will lead a workshop considering the Hindu act of puja, or assemblage of objects and materials in the form of an offering, as praxis. Materials often include used bricks, personal items, flowers, paint, corrugated iron, tin and text.
My name is Georgia Morgan (b. Eora Nation | Sydney 1992) and I am a Tamil Australian artist. My practice is devotional and aspirational. It is storytelling. I am in one place and longing for another (that may or may not exist). My practice is multidisciplinary and includes large-scale site-specific installations, photographs, videos, paintings and ceramics. Materiality, play, intuition and imagining inform my process. When I look at the work I have made, I repeatedly think of puja. Puja is a hindu act of worship that involves offering physical objects — such as gold, fruit or flowers — to an image of a god. Sometimes gold foil or plastic fruit or flowers are offered. This doesn’t detract from the value of worship, as it is the conviction of the action that matters. This knowledge and use of material is consistent in my practice.
It is what I say it is. You believe cause I believe.
Presenters: Kathryn Hendy-Ekers, Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority; Melissa Bedford, Monash University Museum of Art; Sharon Flynn, Gertrude; and representatives from the partnering galleries and museums.
