King Edward Memorial Hospital offer this free* 2 week Parent Education course to pregnant people who are birthing at King Edward Memorial Hospital.
ELIGIBILITY
Birthing at King Edward Memorial Hospital, Family Birth Centre and Osborne Park Hospital (Women’s and Newborn Health Service – WNHS)
RECOMMENDED GESTATION TO BOOK
We recommend booking this class in advance, once you have reached 20 weeks
LOCATION
This course is held at Agnes Walsh House, next door to King Edward Memorial Hospital in Q Block.
This course is run over 2 consecutive Saturdays (2 weeks in total), starting on the date advertised
TICKET INSTRUCTIONS
You only need to book 1 ticket. Support people do not need their own booking.
Please note: Only 1 support person is permitted to attend
When booking, please use the pregnant person's name and Medical Reference Number (see Image Below) found on your pregnancy health record.

There are no facilities to store food. There is a café on site, next door in A Block.
CONTENT
This is a 2 day course for parents, which takes place over 2 consecutive Saturdays, including topics of labour & birthing, birth planning, breastfeeding and parenting taught by experienced and knowledgeable midwives.
- Week 1
Session 1 09:00 – 11:30
This session covers signs of labour, when to come to hospital, what to expect, reframing and integrating the pain experience of labour, how to support someone in labour, how to help your labour progress, how to understand the process of labour, and how hormones and your environment influence labour and birth.
Session 2 12:30 – 15:00
This session covers the actual birth of the baby, the birth of the placenta, delayed cord clamping, perineal tearing, what happens if medical interventions are needed, induction of labour, pain relief options and briefly discusses caesarean section (please note if you are having a planned caesarean, we have individual classes titled Planning a Positive Caesarean Birth & Baby Care - see Trybooking), the importance of skin to skin, and the first hour with your baby.
- Week 2
Session 1 09:00 – 11:30
This session covers what to expect in the early days postnatally including breastfeeding and infant nutrition, and what partners and families can do to support breastfeeding. What to expect physically and emotionally in the first week. This week will also cover an introduction to parenting and self-care in the postnatal period. This class includes a short introduction to breastfeeding - we encourage anyone who is planning to Breastfeed to attend our breastfeeding class run on Thursday mornings for comprehensive education.
Session 2 12:30 – 15:00
This session is all about the new baby and the new experience of parenting – topics include; settling a crying baby, nappy changing and swaddling techniques, how to bath your baby, baby wearing, mental health changes with being new parents and community supports.
