Bike Education for Adults - Nillumbik

Improve your riding skills so that you can get out on your bike more often, and use it to visit friends, go shopping, ride to work or study, and for fitness and recreation.
This course is commissioned by Nillumbik Shire Council and delivered by the professionals from Bike it Better, and is open to adults who live, work or study in Nillumbik.
In a traffic free environment participants will practice basic but essential bike control skills including smooth starting and stopping, using gears, scanning and signalling, and skills for riding on shared paths and roads.
Participants must be able to balance and pedal to ride a bike without training wheels (even if a bit wobbly), and need to bring their own bike and a helmet.

Who is this session suitable for?
- Adults who can ride balance and pedal to ride a bike (even if a bit wobbly), without training wheels
- Suitable for all types of human-powered bicycles, including folding bikes and e-bikes.
- Participants must live, work or study in Nillumbik Shire Council
Session inclusions:
- How to do a safety check on your bike and equipment
- Check that your bike is correctly fitted and adjusted for you
- Basic bike control skills such as braking, cornering, straight line riding, using gears, and stopping in an emergency
- Essential on-road techniques such as signalling, scanning, and using eye contact
- Discussion about riding around town confidently such as using shared paths and bike lanes, and using maps for route planning
- Information about local bike groups
- Lots of time for Q&A
How many participants will be in the group?
- The group size is limited to 12 participants.
What should I bring?
- A bicycle of suitable size and type, in good condition with working brakes, a bell and pumped up tyres. If you are unsure, please email bikeitbettercyclecoaching@gmail.com prior to booking.
- Australian Standards Approved helmet in good condition
- Runners or similar closed-toe footwear
- Sun/weather protection
- Snacks and water as needed (a light lunch and morning tea will be provided)
- Any medication
- Suitable clothing for the conditions
What is the start/finish time?
The session will take place from 9:30am to 2pm (including a 30min break for lunch). Please arrive 5-10 minutes early to sign in and prepare your bike.
Where should I come for the training?
The session will take place at the Plenty War Memorial Park (in Carpark & Pavilion). You will be sent a reminder email with these details and where to meet a few days before the session. See map at the bottom of this page.
What facilities are there at the location?
Toilets, water and undercover areas are available nearby.
What if the weather isn’t great?
The training will only be cancelled if the weather forecast predicts very wet, very windy or very hot weather. In this event, we will contact you 2 hours prior to the start time. If weather conditions deteriorate after training has begun, training activities may be modified or omitted or the session terminated to minimise health and safety risks.
Who is the instructor?
Your instructor will be Cazz from Bike it Better. You are in good hands! Cazz is a very experienced and passionate bicycle skills instructor with more than 12 years experience, and over that time has developed a wealth of knowledge and techniques to get the best out of students of all levels. Cazz provides various bicycle education sessions for a number of councils and community groups around Melbourne, teaching bike riders from complete beginner through to intermediate. Cazz is also a Bike Ed Master Trainer, leading training courses for Bike Ed Instructors; and is a training provider for Foundation Level Mountain Bike Skills Instructor courses for AusCycling. Do I have to bring my printed ticket?
You don't need to bring your ticket on the day. We will have a list of registered participants.
What if I can't attend the session?
If you have booked a ticket and can no longer attend, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can open up your spot for somebody else to attend.
