The Merry Wives of Windsor by Otto Nicolai
The Merry Wives of Windsor is a comic opera in 3 Acts by Otto Nicolai, based on William Shakespeare's play of the same name. The knight Sir John Falstaff decides to fix his financial woes by seducing the wives of two wealthy merchants, mistresses Ford and Page. They discover they have received identical love letters from Falstaff offering his services as a lover. These two independent and feisty ladies set out to embarrass and take their revenge on Falstaff and in so doing, teach him a well-deserved lesson. Meanwhile, Anna Page, (the daughter of Mr and Mrs Page), has her own troubles as she cleverly resists the rich and absurd suitors her parents have chosen for her in favour of her beloved Fenton. From its charming overture, (which is also a popular concert hall favourite), sparkling arias, brilliant choruses and ensembles as well as comical characters and plot situations, this fun and much-loved opera will delight audiences as it has done since its premiere in 1849.
