Laboratory Grown or Natural Diamond Short Course May 2025
This is a hands-on workshop with the emphasis on handling stones, using normal laboratory techniques to begin with and progressing to more advanced techniques if it needs a more complete diagnosis.
A one-day course on synthetic diamonds and diamond simulants given by Katrina Marchioni, including both theory and practical components using all the tools you need to determine the type of diamond or simulant you examine and if it needs a more complete diagnosis by advanced techniques.
You will have access on the day to instruments available on the market such as:
- Presidium Synthetic Diamond Screener II
- Gemetrix PL Inspector
- Presidium Diamond Tester
There will also be a demonstration of the Magilabs EXA Fluorescence Spectrometer.
The workshop will also involve using standard gemmological instruments, such as polariscope, microscope and UV, to investigate the differences in internal strain patterns in natural type I, CVD Lab grown Type II, and HPHT lab grown Type II diamonds and various ultraviolet reactions to identify the different types of diamond and different treatments.
Advanced Laboratory techniques used in commercially operating diamond and gem testing laboratories will also be discussed for circumstances in which complete analysis is required.
