In GENDER SWAP, the students explore the always-intriguing idea of gender swapping. This allows them to explore themes, ideas and given circumstances that they may have never thought of before.
The exercise demands students make strong choices, and determine whether the gender of the character changes along with that of the actor. What happens when Othello is played by a woman? Would Iago need to be also? And what about Desdemona?
Or to what extent does the text require some rewriting. This is especially exciting with the more modern texts, where the best dramatists are gender-specific in psychology as well as vocabulary.
In PHYSICAL DEPTHS, the students explore how far we can take the physicality of a contemporary text before it becomes unbelievable. What do we DO when emotions run high?
How small have we become in our contemporary society? Has our electronically-induced isolation caused us to live smaller lives than our historical counterparts?
