The Boîte presents Liz Frencham and Mastaneh Nazarian

When bass player Liz Frencham and multi-instrumentalist Mastaneh Nazarian get together at 1 Mark St. they will offer listeners a range of treats. Liz, a double-bass caressing, song-writing chanteuse is well known and much loved for her extraordinary flexibility and adaptability and her collaborations with many many performers in Australia’s folk and acoustic music scene.
Her current boast on facebook: 'Am celebrating that tiny little trophy icon in this image that indicates that once again (for 11 years straight!) I've written or collaborated on 14 songs so far this February as a part of the February Album Writing Month Challenge. In fact reaching target on day 24 is actually a record for me. It's usually on day 27 or 28. I'm not done yet. In fact there are 8 other songs I'm actively working on and hope to get to rough demo stage by the close of business next weekend.'
Composer and guitarist Mastaneh Nazarian has been presenting work in various jazz and contemporary settings since 1992. She too is a considerable collaborator, in September 2023 she exhibited Journey of Violets, an interactive meditation on a poem by Shafiei Kadkani at Smith and Gertrude Gallery collaborating with visual artist Pouya Bagheri and movement artist Jonathan Sinatra, supported by a project grant from Yarra City Arts.
In this performance Mastaneh brings her 11 string Iranian oud, that deep voiced Middle Eastern instrument that so beautifully replicates the sound of a singer. Her program will draw from Iranian Dastgah and other collected melodies as departure points and doorways into improvisations.
