The concert opens with George Gershwin's An American in Paris This orchestral tone poem depicts the experience of an American visitor in Paris. It captures the sounds of the city, including the famous French taxi horns! Blending jazz influences with traditional orchestration, it is a vibrant and atmospheric piece.
Victor Herbert's Cello Concerto No. 2 in E minor is known for its lyrical melodies and emotional depth, highlighting the expressive capabilities of the cello. It features a strong interplay between the soloist and the orchestra, making it a key work in the cello repertoire.
We are thrilled to be joined by up-and-coming Australian cellist Noah Oshiro. Now in his final year of studies at the Sydney Conservatorium, Noah has performed wth Musica Viva, the Sydney SYmphony Orchestra and Opera Australia. Noah was the 2024 winner of the 2MBS Fine Music Sydney Young Virtuoso award.
Antonín Dvořák's Symphony No. 9 'From the New World' combines elements of Czech folk music with inspirations from American musical traditions. It is celebrated for its memorable themes, including the famous 'Largo,' and its powerful exploration of new musical landscapes.
