About
Behrouz Boochani is an award-winning Kurdish writer, journalist, scholar, cultural advocate and filmmaker. His memoir No Friend But the Mountains (Pan Macmillan 2018, trans. Omid Tofighian) was written during his seven years of incarceration by the Australian government in Papua New Guinea’s Manus Island prison. It went on to win the 2019 Victorian Prize for Literature in addition to the Nonfiction category and is being adapted as a film. His most recent book, Freedom, Only Freedom, was published by Bloomsbury in late 2022. He contributes to The Guardian, The Saturday Paper, The Financial Times and The Age and resides in New Zealand.Image by Hoda Afshar, Manus 2018.
