SUNDAY MATTUTINO: TIMOTHY YOUNG, PIANO
This morning’s program pairs two towering masterpieces of the piano repertoire: Chopin’s Sonata No. 2 in B-flat minor and Ravel’s Gaspard de la nuit. Though composed nearly a century apart, both works explore the darker edges of Romantic imagination — Chopin through the brooding lyricism and tragic sweep of his famous and enigmatic ‘funeral march’ sonata, and Ravel through eerie, fantastical soundscapes inspired by the poetry of Aloysius Bertrand, dazzling with his shimmering textures and virtuosic extremes, pushing pianistic colour and complexity to the limits.
