The Greek Australian Cultural League warmly invites you to the Melbourne launch of Hydra in Winter by Shelley Dark—Saturday 24th May, 2–3.30pm at the Hellenic Museum, 280 William Street, Melbourne.Named a Notable Book of 2025 by The Weekend Australian Review, Hydra in Winter is the story of what happens when you fly to a Greek island in the middle of winter to chase a pirate. Shelley went in search of her husband’s great-great-grandfather—Ghikas Voulgaris, one of the first Greek convicts transported to Australia. She stayed in a historic Voulgaris mansion, climbed the island’s hills, spent time with the wonderful staff at the local archives, and—thanks to the warm hospitality of the locals—discovered the quiet joy of slow travel.
