Veteran Mental Health and Trauma Awareness Masterclass
About
In this Masterclass we will explore key mental health considerations when supporting Older People who are also veterans. Areas we will cover include:
- Who is a veteran – and how military service can impact self-identify and mental health and wellbeing across the life course
- Mental health risks and protective factors for this population
- What is trauma, it’s potential impacts, and how these can change as we age
- Providing care and support aligned with trauma-informed principles, including as people enter Aged Care.
Participants will improve their awareness of possible issues for this population and their families/carers, and will be provided with practical strategies and resources to assist them in their work with Older People who are also veterans.

Professor Nicole Sadler,Clinical Psychologist and the Director and CEO of Phoenix Australia – Centre for Posttraumatic Mental Health. and Enterprise Professor within the Department of Psychiatry, University of Melbourne
For over three decades Nicole has worked with military members, veterans, emergency service workers, frontline health care professionals, and communities impacted by disasters and large scale events. She is an expert in trauma-related mental health and wellbeing, suicide and disaster mental health. She has led major mental health strategic reviews, research, and policy and training development prohects for organisations across Australia and internationally. Prior to joining Phoenix Australia in 2017, she served in the full-time Army for over 20 years and completed her career in the senior Army psychology position. She continues to serve in the Army Reserves at the rank of Brigadier as the Principal Consultant - Mental Health.
