AAC Process - A training series for Speech Pathologists (2)
For an individual to effectively use their AAC system, therapists need to have a systematic approach from identifying need to implementation.
This three part training series covers the first 3 phases of the AAC process:
1. Assessment, January 17, 2023
2. Identifying goals and features required, January 31, 2023
3. Identifying suitable AAC options, February 14, 2023
The workshops will give speech pathologists the knowledge and confidence to apply the process in their clinical practise.
This training is for Speech Pathologists who are:
- New to augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), OR
- Wanting a clear framework/process for how to complete a thorough AAC assessment and how to choose appropriate AAC options for the individuals they support, OR
- New graduates
What is included:
Each day registration includes morning and afternoon tea. Please bring your own lunch or alternatively a range of cafes/shops are available nearby.
Pre-reading material will be supplied prior to each session.
A comprehensive resource will be provided.
Additional information
All participants must be working with individuals who require AAC. Throughout the training, participants will be given the opportunity to reflect on an individual they are working with and develop an action plan to apply what they have learnt. Participants are encouraged to implement their action plan in between training sessions.
Pre-reading prior to each training session will be required.

Delara Kapadia, Certified Practicing Speech Pathologist
Delara graduated in 2002. She has worked extensively with children and adults with complex communication needs in various community and education settings. Since becoming a clinical specialist in AAC in 2007 she has provided direct AAC services as well as supported clinicians. Most recently Delara has provided training and consultation to therapists all across Western Australia. Delara is passionate about helping individuals with disability find their voice through AAC and educating therapists and communication partners about best practice.
Denise Imms, Certified Practicing Speech Pathologist
Denise graduated in 2003 and has worked in the disability sector since then as a clinician, a supervisor, and more recently as a consultant providing training and support to therapists across Western Australia. Denise has worked predominantly with young children and their families and has a keen interest in supporting them to use AAC to achieve their goals. Denise also enjoys sharing her passion in AAC with therapists and increasing their confidence in supporting children with complex communication needs.
