Denial
About
Based on the acclaimed book “History on Trial: My Day in Court with a Holocaust Denier,” and adapted for the screen by David Hare, Denial tells the story of historian Deborah Lipstadt’s legal battle for historical truth against David Irving. After becoming internationally notorious for his public provocations, British historian David Irving confronted Lipstadt and sued her for libel for declaring him a holocaust denier. Within the British legal system, the burden of proof lies on the accused for libel lawsuits, so Lipstadt and her team had to prove that the Holocaust took place and that Irving genuinely believed the repulsive things he was saying. Predominantly a tense courtroom drama, this film raises fascinating questions around ethics, freedom of speech, and whether or not Irving should have the right to question survivors on the stand. The screening is timed to coincide with the Holocaust Memorial Day ceremony also taking place on 28 January at 2pm in Bank Gardens.
