Passion and Passacaglia
About
Colourful 17th Century virtuosity
Julia Bishop (violin)
Paula Chateauneuf (theorbo)
An exhilarating evening of music by some of the most entertaining and flamboyant composers of the 17th century, exploring the way the violin and lute family were emerging at this time as highly virtuosic and colourful solo instruments. These ground-breaking pioneers were experimenting with the innovations in vocal music, where the passionate expression of the words became paramount. They transferred these ideals to instrumental music to brilliant effect - a sort of opera without words! Some composers will be familiar but others may be not so, and we look forward to introducing these lesser-known but highly-regarded mavericks of the day.
