In 2021 an ACOSVO survey found that many leaders receive little support in their role with almost 50% of CEOs not receiving an annual appraisal from their board and whilst close to 70% had regular contact with their Board, when this was examined further it had two very distinct arms. The following two comments highlight the vast difference many experienced in regard to board support: 'Contact with Board members is not for 'support' it usually involves meetings and then more work for me.' Compared to: 'My Chair is fantastic - a huge support throughout'. It is clear from this that the Chair is instrumental in supporting the CEO to achieve your organisation's mission. But what does this look like in practice? How do you effectively support your CEO given the current climate? This workshop will help answer your questions!
The relationship between the CEO and the Chair of an organisation is one of the most important within a voluntary organisation. It takes time and work to ensure that this relationship is one that moves the organisation forward. This interactive and practical workshop will focus on the role of the Chair in effectively supporting the CEO to ensure the organisation achieves its mission and objectives and will cover:
- Why a good relationship between Chair and CEO is essential.
- What makes a good relationship.
- How to identify if your CEO needs support.
- How to effectively support your CEO given the current context.
This event is only open to Chairs/Vice-Chairs of Scottish voluntary sector organisations, we hope you can join us.
About the Facilitator
Sue Pearlman has wide experience in the voluntary sector both as a senior manager and as a trustee. In 2004 she established TP Consultants to provide freelance consultancy and training. Sue is a skilled facilitator, trainer, supervisor and mentor. Her particular interests include governance, trustee/staff relationships, developing partnerships and collaborative working. She continues to be a trustee for a local and a national organisation.
Sue’s work has included board reviews, facilitating communication between trustees and senior managers, running workshops on all aspects of governance, the different legal structures, Trustee Roles & Responsibilities, Effective Boards and Effective Meetings, mergers and resulting operational issues.
A major part of Sue’s work is Governance Reviews for organisations, large and small. She also mentors senior staff and trustees. She often runs Away Days and other bespoke training for staff and/or trustees, and she enjoys the challenges of team building. Sue also facilitates Action Learning Sets for senior managers in the voluntary sector.
