Public Lecture: Snakebite! The biggest public health crisis you've never heard of!
Tuesday 13th May, 6.30 - 8pm

About the lecture
Every year snakebite envenoming claims 138,000 lives and leaves 400,000 people permanently injured, particularly in rural and tropical regions of Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The late Kofi Annan called it ‘the biggest public health crisis you’ve never heard of’. But what’s being done to stop this silent menace?Dr Steve Hall of Lancaster University will shed his skin as a pharmacologist to explore the history of snakebite, the limitations of current treatments, and cutting-edge research to improve treatment - both in the UK and abroad.
About the Speaker
Dr Hall is a Canadian academic who started his research career in chemistry before switching to pharmacology for his PhD in which he studied the anti-cancer properties of bacterial-derived compounds. However, as someone who has loved snakes and venoms for as long as he can remember, he moved to the UK in 2020 to follow his interests by researching drugs and drug combinations as potential new treatments for snakebite envenoming at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine. He joined Lancaster University as a Lecturer in Pharmacology in August of 2023.
