Westfield Park FIT Count Training Session

Join Buglife Conservation Officer, Ruth Quigley, to learn a simple method for surveying pollinators at Westfield Park. The event will start with a presentation in the Scout hall, where you will learn about the importance of pollinators, and the main groups to look out for. We will then go into the park to undertake 'Flower Insect Timed' counts, and to see what exciting pollinators we can find! No prior knowledge or experience is required. Tea, coffee and cake will be provided during the talk, and all materials for the FIT count will be provided too. Please do dress for the weather, and bring appropriate sturdy footwear. If the weather forecast is bad for the day, the event may need to be cancelled. If so, you will be contacted in advance.

Bordered Brown Lacewing & Northern Brown Argus ID workshop

Come along to this FREE workshop to learn about two rare invertebrates that can be found on the Aberdeenshire coast - the Bordered Brown Lacewing and the Northern Brown Argus. Join Caitlin, Buglife Species on the Edge Conservation Officer, and learn about the lifecycles of these species, how to identify them in the field, and how to survey both species and habitat. The workshop will begin with a presentation session in the community hall at St James Episcopal Church in Stonehaven and will be followed by a survey at Skatie Shore. All under 18s must be accompanied by an adult. Please wear suitable clothing and bring a packed lunch. Equipment will be provided but feel free to bring your own sweep net or hand lens.

Dr. Gibson, spent many years working for Natural England and was involved in the designation of this Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). He will therefore be sharing more about the sites history as well as the plants we encounter whilst enjoying the great outdoors.

City Nature Challenge: Photography for biological recording (CANCELLED)

With photography, biological recording is now more accessible than ever. However, knowing what to photograph to make sure identifiable feaures are in shot can be difficult. Join Joshua Clarke, conservation officer at Buglife and macro photographer as he explores the use of photography to aid in recording. Joshua will also explore when and when not to use photography - e.g., many species will need microscopy and dissection to confirm ID, thus a photo will not suffice. However, having a photograph record, regardless if can get to species, will give a reason for those more experienced to head out to find a specimen; it may be in a site not yet explored! Rhonda Ridley from National Museums NI will also join to provide further guidance on City Nature Challenge in Belfast.

Torchlight Bug Hunt: Opiliones

Join Joshua Clarke, conservation officer for Buglife and invertebrate guide on this special torchlight harvestmen and bug hunt! On this guided walk around the grounds of the Ulster Folk Museum, you’ll be looking for Harvestmen (Opiliones) - an under-appreciated taxonomic group related to spiders. You’ll hear about how these enigmatic creatures have gained several incredible behavioural tactics to avoid becoming prey and how non-native species have been established under-the-radar. You may also find some other incredible nocturnal invertebrates! Uncover and learn about the ecology and biodiversity of so much more on the way! Please note: - This is an outdoor walking event at night time so please dress appropriately and check the weather. - This event is only suitable for those able to walk off road. - Some routes will be muddy and slippy so walking boots or similar are advised. - Some torches will be available but please bring a head torch if you have one

National Museums NI & Buglife The iNaturalist platform enables users to record, map and identify their natural history observations taken on their smart phone. In this session we will provide online training on how you can use iNaturalist to record nature. We will cover basic functionality, tools and some useful tips. This event is suitable for absolute beginners who are new to iNaturalist. It is a precursor event to the City Nature Challenge Global Bioblitz event 26th – 29th April 2024 Greater Belfast is competing with 400+ cities to see who can observe and identify the most species using the citizen science platform iNaturalist. Grasslands for Pollinators with Buglife & Scotia Seeds

This Session is being delivered as part of the People & Pollinators in Strathmore Project (Strathmore B-Lines) for Angus and Perth & Kinross Council staff who help to manage greenspaces within the Strathmore Valley. This will be an informative outdoor session hosted at Scotia Seeds. Whilst walking around Mavisbank we will be discussing the importance of grasslands for pollinators, methods for restoring and establishing wildflower-rich grasslands and different approaches for managing grasslands for pollinating insects. It will also be an opportunity for staff to ask questions and share their experiences- projects which may or may not have been successful and how this could be approached differently in the future. The Importance of Habitat Connectivity for Pollinators

Join Buglife and two PhD researchers, Aaron Bhambra and Indiana Jones to learn more about the importance of heathlands and species-rich grasslands are for pollinating insects. Aaron's talk, titled 'Bugs, Drones and Habitat Change : A case study of Heathlands in the West Midlands’, will discuss the value of lowland heath as a priority habitat for threatened bees and wasps , whilst exploring how unmanned aerial vehicles can be pioneered to help manage , protect and restore some of our most important sites for insects in Britain. Indiana's talk, titled 'Investigating how restoration and connectivity impacts UK pollinating species' will discuss her current and past PhD work on the impact that B-lines has on UK pollinating species through modelling and fieldwork. As well as highlighting the importance of species-rich grasslands for pollinating insects.

Blue Ground Beetle workshop

The Blue Ground Beetle is currently only known from 15 sites in the UK, 6 of these are in Cornwall. Over the next few years we’ll be undertaking surveys to see whether we are able to find it in any more locations in the county, and we need your help! Join us and local entomologist John Walters to learn all about Blue Ground Beetle habitat and whether a woodland is likely to support them. Use your new found beetle hunting skills to help us appraise Cornish ancient woodlands and help us on our quest to discover more about Blue Ground Beetles in Cornwall. This event will be held at the Boconnoc Estate. Directions to the estate and details about where to park will be emailed out before the event - please do not use Sat Nav. Attendees should ensure they are wearing warm and waterproof clothing and have strong and suitable footwear - we will be walking through woodlands.

Rich in plants, insects and animals, there are more species per square metre here than any other site in the UK. It has even been referred to as ‘England’s Rainforest’. As such, it’s one of the most important British sites for endangered invertebrates. The RSPB manage just under 19ha of the SSSI as a nature reserve in partnership with Buglife, on behalf of the Land Trust, with work underway to bring more of the site under management with public access.
