Zimbe!

Thursday 21 November 2024
Zimbe! is the phenomenon which has rocked the choral world since its premiere in 2008, cementing Alexander L'Estrange's reputation as one of the UK's most popular choral composers of the 21st Century. Performed by the massed choirs of Prior Park College and The Paragon, Zimbe! is a sequence of choral arrangements of traditional songs from all over Africa in a jazz style. This is a work which forges links between adult choirs and massed children’s choirs, placing singing at the heart of the community as it always has been in Africa. And, since jazz grew out of blues which itself sprang from the mouths of African people, what better accompaniment for these songs than a jazz quintet? Zimbe! is at times touching and moving, at other times funky and grooving and all of the time incredibly uplifting both for performers and audiences alike. The concert also features the College Orchestra and other ensembles.

The Watsons

Between Thursday 14 November 2024 and Friday 15 November 2024
What happens when the writer loses the plot? Emma Watson is 19 and new in town. She's been cut off by her rich aunt and dumped back in the family home. Emma and her sisters must marry, fast. If not, they face poverty, spinsterhood, or worse: an eternity with their boorish brother and his awful wife. Luckily there are plenty of potential suitors to dance with, from flirtatious Tom Musgrave to castle-owning Lord Osborne, who's as awkward as he is rich. So far so familiar. But there's a problem: Jane Austen didn't finish the story. Who will write Emma's happy ending now? Based on her incomplete novel, Laura Wade’s witty play looks under the bonnet of Jane Austen and asks: What can characters do when their author abandons them?
