Lecture - Spanning the Political Divide
About
Dr. Carole Fry will present a lecture - Spanning The Political Divide - Neo-Palladianism and the Eighteenth Century Landscape.Neo-Palladianism was a taste revolution; a movement that transformed much of the built environment in the 18th century. The style had an all-encompassing effect leaving its mark on every aspect or art and taste at this time. There are many myths about neo-Palladianism however, perhaps the biggest myth being that it was the preserve of a single political party, the Whigs. This paper examines these myths and explores more likely theories about the style and its effect on 18th century landscapes. This lecture will examine the importance of societal connections for the dissemination and success of the style across England.
We will also look at the use of the landscape as a political canvas at this time with the garden being used to demonstrate political affiliation and also a sense of political betrayal.
