About
Exploring the Cuckoo’s Nest – The Ravelston Estate and the Mary Erskine School.Hidden away in the leafy suburbs of North Edinburgh lies the tranquil estate of Ravelston House. Originally the site of the 17thC home of the Foulis family, the house boasted one of the finest walled gardens of its period.
In the mid 1950’s with the estate in decline, The Merchant Company submitted plans to rehome the Mary Erskine School from its deteriorating premises in Queen Street.
Not all believed the move would be beneficial to the Queen Street girls; the school magazine stated ‘the distant sound of a cuckoo (or even a wood pigeon) can hardly give the same intellectual stimulus as the roar of traffic on Queen St and the unloading of milk crates in the lane. We fear that the easy living of Ravelston may prove poor physical specimens in the years to come.’
Here is your chance to explore the hidden history of the Ravelston Estate and learn about the ‘easy living’ of those Queen Street evacuees!
