Our Food Futures: Rising Inequality and Climate Change
Thursday 24th October 2024, 6.30 - 8pm
About the lecture
The Food & Agriculture Organization of the UN estimates that more than 800 million people globally are affected by hunger. Despite rapid technological progress on many fronts (including in agricultural production) this unconscionable statistic continues to haunt us. Food banks across the developed world (including the UK and the US) are seeing unprecedented numbers with a growing cost of living crisis in the post-pandemic era. While each country may have unique reasons for the rise in hunger, there are some factors common especially in the global south, including rising inequality, climate change induced extreme events and the economic shocks of the pandemic.
The speaker will chart the journey of what a fundamental right to food entails in law and practice. He will outline the challenges of growing inequality and climate shocks that are exacerbating the food crisis in India, and globally, and will look at how countries might respond to these challenges.
