Health Documentary Film Festival with LA1 Docs
About
Join us for an afternoon of health focussed short documentaries and Q&A sessions with film makers and academic experts. We'll be exploring mental health issues, community health research, assisted dying and more.
The second Health Documentary Film Festival at Health Innovation One is not to be missed.
You are welcome to come along and watch the full programme of films, or stay for particular showings which pique your interest. The choice is yours - but it promises to be a fascinating afternoon of films and Q&A sessions with filmmakers and academic experts. So come along and enjoy an afternoon of (digital) celluloid - accompanied by popcorn and refreshments - and the chance to find out more about the topics on screen.
Content warning: due to the nature of the topics and research projects these films relate to, there may be some content you wish to avoid for your own wellbeing. There will be opportunity to not view the full schedule. Content includes mental health, suicide, childhood trauma, sexual assault, strong language.
Films:
Between 1pm and 3pm, the early afternoon sessions in our Innovation Lab offer the opportunity to watch three short films, made by and featuring Lancaster University researchers and partners, and ask questions directly to academics and filmmakers around their motivations and reasons for creating their films. These are:
On My Terms – a docu-drama by Professor Nancy Preston following a family and their healthcare workers as a man pursues his plans for assisted dying.
i am who i am – a film about health research with young people by Dr Faye Tucker and Dr Jude Lunn.
Bay Lines: Beach of Dreams - A celebration of the natural environment of Morecambe Bay by the Morecambe Bay Partnership. The film aims to encourage people to walk or cycle the Bay and consider what the future holds for each precious mile.
From 3pm to 4.30pm, we move in to the Lecture Theatre to view three short films from the wider North West region with the opportunity to ask questions to the filmmakers and network after.
Finding 'Appiness - After 70 years of keeping a devastating secret, eccentric fashionista Allan Bradbury is on a journey to recovery. By opening up about his childhood trauma can he find true ‘appiness in later life? A film by Northern Heart Films.
Portrait with a Pal - Three short films created by More Music and filmmaker Dom Bush of Land & Sky Media in Kendal. Films about supporting local people and partnership working as part of 'Music for Health' in Morecambe including A.C.E, Bay Medical Group and West End Impact.
How To Build A Life - Louis, a young man with Asperger’s, talks candidly to his older brother about a decade-long struggle with bullying that nearly ended his life. He finds strength in his unique passion for Lego and his loyal dog, creating an outlet for his creativity and healing. A film by Matthew Reese.
