The English Departments of the Royal Grammar School (RGS) Guildford and Tormead School would like to invite you to an evening lecture with Professor John Mullan, the Lord Northcliffe Chair of Modern English Literature and the Head of the Department of English Language and Literature at University College London (UCL).

Professor Mullan’s distinguished career has seen him teach at the University of Cambridge, Queen Mary University of London, and since 1994, UCL. He has also been a contributing writer for The Guardian and The London Review of Books, as well as presenting various shows for the BBC and judging the Booker Prize. His publications for general readership include How Novels Work and The Artful Dickens: The Tricks and Ploys of the Great Novelist.

Professor Mullan will be delivering a lecture which will champion the skills that studying English at post-16 level and beyond can develop in young people. The lecture will also include a discussion of some of William Shakespeare’s “Great Tragedies”, namely Antony and Cleopatra, Hamlet, King Lear and Othello. Following the lecture and a brief intermission, Professor Mullan will be fielding questions from a panel of students and the audience.

This event is likely to appeal to students and parents interested in the study of English Literature at any level, but particularly those GCSE and A-Level students who are considering studying the subject in the Sixth Form or at university. Teachers interested in this event as a CPD opportunity are also warmly invited.
