Women with Altitude - A talk by Anna Fleming
About
Join us for an evening with the acclaimed traveller, alpinist and writer Anna Fleming (UKC / The Guardian / BBC Radio 4) as she talks about her latest adventure climbing in Bolivia with the Cholita Climbers. As well as climbing several 5000 and 6000m+ peaks, she met and interviewed the Cholita Climbers, a group of Aymara Indigenous women climbers who climb the highest mountains in South America in their traditional dress, the pollera - huge skirts, three petticoats and an agoyu (a knotted blanket that serves as a backpack).
Who are the Cholita Climbers? Why do they climb in skirts? How is climbing changing their lives?
The talk will introduce you to these remarkable Bolivian women and reveal what it’s like to climb their huge peaks, now transforming through climate change.
Be inspired and discover the Cholitas’ astonishing journey into alpinism and the tops of the world.
