Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Democracy (FoSS) (SOLD OUT)
About
Roundtable (Lancaster University and Lancaster City Council)2024 has been a monumental year for democracy, with almost half of the planet voting in elections. Increasingly, AI is being used in political campaigning, including to create electoral and campaign materials, and through the use of synthetic media, including ‘deepfake’ video and audio content. The threat from algorithmic manipulation of disinformation has also been a serious cause for concern, with social media platforms acting as a conduit between voters and the electoral choices they are making. Is AI becoming a threat to democratic processes and democratic governance? How are malicious actors seeking to use AI to sow discord in democracies and undermine trust in political processes? Can AI act as a tool to enhance and protect democracy, including by providing voters new ways to engage with governments and political institutions?
