Three composers who did much to bring about the English musical renaissance at the turn of the twentieth century, Wood and Stanford reminding us that we are a seafaring nation, while Parry, who was a keen yachtsman, is represented by the sort of choral writing that would go far towards inspiring Vaughan Williams’s A Sea Symphony. Parry’s piece sings of being “in tune with heaven”, while Poulenc used to refer to Mozart, represented with his final symphony popularly named after the king of the Roman gods, as “God the Father.” Theologian Karl Barthes observed that when the angels are in the presence of God they perform Bach. When they are on their own they perform Mozart: and God comes along to listen.
